At Systime we are committed to providing learning materials that enable teachers and students to work with generative AI in a safe and appropriate context. Our framework for developing AI-based interactivities is inspired by Christian Dalsgaard, DPU, Aarhus University, who does research in the learning potential of digital technologies. Our framework includes various requirements for learning, design, construction, and quality assurance to ensure a high academic outcome and user safety.
Systime’s AI-declaration
Systime’s AI-based interactivities are didactically integrated into our learning materials. Typically, they provide a sort of training space where students can explore and enhance their understanding of, for example, academic terms, models, analysis and vocabulary before a class discussion or a run through by a teacher. This means that our AI-based interactivities are not stand-alone features but are part of a didactic interaction with the learning material and the teacher. They are based on Christian Dalsgaard’s model of learning-enhanced use of AI. Therefore, our AI-based interactivities are designed so the users enter into a “partnership” with the interactivity to increase their knowledge and apply their own knowledge from a new perspective.
Before the AI-based interactivities are included in the learning material, they are tested internally and externally by teachers and students through several iterations to minimize the risk of errors, hallucinations, and inappropriate behaviour such as harmful or insulting responses. However, it is not possible to entirely avoid hallucinations, which is why all AI-based interactivities have a disclaimer informing the users that mistakes and unintended behaviour may occur.
The AI-based interactivities do not log, track, or monitor user information when they are used in our internetBooks. Systime complies with the rules of copyright, including in our use of AI. In some cases, we have required original material to be used in AI-based interactivities and in other cases, we can use original material due to the expiration of the copyright.
All our AI-based interactivities targeted at upper secondary schools are unavailable during exam periods, as specified in the exam calendar of the Ministry of Children and Education. The calendar can be found on the Ministry’s website.
